The Ferris Buellers Day Off Race Home Locations

In the scene, Tom and Ferris are heading north, in front of the home located at 2115 Butternut. So near the end of our hunt, when Owen mentioned that one of the only sites we had yet to find was the home that Ferris skids around, I had an inkling that one of the Milan pads might be the place we were looking for. Inspecting both properties from different angles, I quickly realized that Ferris races around 1310 Milan, the same spot where he introduced himself to the sunbathers moments before. In the scene, he heads west down 1310’s driveway and then cuts sharply to the right before heading north across the front of the house, surprising two young women sitting on the porch. In the next scene, Sloane, Cameron, and Ferris are in the left field stands inside Wrigley.

Cameron, who is afraid of his father's wrath, is dismayed when Ferris decides to take the car on a day trip into Chicago. Ferris promises they will return the car as it was, including preserving the original odometer mileage. During the parade, several of the people seen dancing originally had nothing to do with the film.

The film has been parodied in television series, with characters taking a day off from their normal routine to have a day of adventure. Examples include the episodes "Barry's Day Off" from The Goldbergs, "Brian Finch's Black Op" from Limitless, and "Turner's and Brenda's Day Off" from South Side. Total gross in the United States was approximately $70,136,369, making it a box office success.

Since Owen was so instrumental in the hunt, I thought it only fitting that he add notes to the column. So, without further ado, we present to you a breakdown of the Ferris Bueller’s Day Off race home sequence filming locations from beginning to end. For the film, Hughes got the chance to take a more expansive look at the city he grew up in. In late October 1985, the production moved to Los Angeles, and shooting ended on November 22. Scenes were filmed at several locations in downtown Chicago and Winnetka (Ferris's home, his mother's real estate office, etc.).

Other locations in Illinois

It’s five minutes until six and everybody’s favorite truant, Ferris Bueller , has to beat his parents home lest they find out that he has cut school for the ninth time! (“I don’t remember him being sick nine times!”) So begins one of the most famous sequences in all of moviedom, the race home from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Though said to take place in Chicago, Ferris’ race home – as well as the rest of the 1986 comedy – was shot in both Illinois and California. While doing research for the column, I enlisted the help of my friend Owen, from the When Write Is Wrong blog, to track down some of the movie’s unknown locations.

It's been a tough couple of years, so it's really no surprise that people of all generations are feeling nostalgic for a more optimistic era with an easy-to-define aesthetic. Visitors tour the pavilion in the back of the modernist home in Highland Park, Ill., that was featured in the movie "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" in 2009. Cameron stares closely at 'Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte'. Well, Ferris is finally home, his parents are none the wiser, Principal Rooney’s cheese has been left out in the wind, and our work here is done. (Mostly done, anyway – we’re still missing that darn BBQ Man’s backyard!) As I said earlier, this hunt, though lengthy and exhaustive, was a blast from start to finish.

Not long after the sculpture was installed, kids started using it as a slide, and so began the city's passion for interactive sculptures. There's always been a lot of love for mold-breakers like Calder in Chicago. The American sculptor was honored with his very own Alexander Calder Day on Oct. 25, 1974, a celebration that involved marching bands and circus wagons, and featured Calder himself as the ringmaster, holding court atop a Schlitz beer wagon.

The lively street party takes place under two huge tents and involves drinking beer from plastic steins, German delicacies, oompah music, fun games and overall merriment. As Chicago's Oktoberfest traditions have evolved, celebrations now take place some 5 miles north in Lincoln Square, a vibrant neighborhood known for its tree-lined streets, distinct German traditions, craft beer, community art projects and diverse restaurants. Visit a metropolis with any teen and they will always gravitate toward superlatives. During the age of Ferris, the black-sheathed Sears Tower, built in 1973, was the world’s tallest building, a distinction it would hold for nearly a quarter-century.

Featuring a bevy of landmarks in the city, it is also a quintessential Chicago movie. Thus, it is natural for many to wonder whether the meta-comedy was also shot in the Windy City. The music used for the final version of the museum sequence is an instrumental cover version of The Smiths' "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want", performed by The Dream Academy. A passionate Beatles fan, Hughes makes multiple references to them and John Lennon in the script. During filming, Hughes "listened to The White Album every single day for fifty-six days." Hughes also pays tribute to his childhood hero Gordie Howe with Cameron's Detroit Red Wings jersey. "I sent them the jersey,” said Howe. "It was nice seeing the No. 9 on the big screen."

This particular residence had some unique design elements that were visible in the scene, including a semi-curved brick window trim , a white gutter , and an in-ground light fixture posted near the steps leading from the driveway to the front door. In searching street views, he found aspects matching all of those items at 1229 Cherry. Pinpointing the site is what ultimately led us to finding Backyard #1 and Backyard #2. Not much of the property has changed in the 31 years (!) since filming took place, as you can see in the photograph below, which comes from a 2004 real estate listing. The film is a love story, a comedy that relies on slapstick, situation and screwball alike; the film is an odd beast of basic convention, surrealist humour and truancy glorification.

Wrigley Field is featured in two interwoven and consecutive scenes. In the first scene, Rooney is looking for Ferris at a pizza joint while the voice of Harry Caray announces the action of a ballgame that is being shown on TV. From the play-by-play descriptions, the uniforms, and the player numbers, this game has been identified as the June 5, 1985, game between the Atlanta Braves and the Chicago Cubs. According to editor Paul Hirsch, in the original cut, the museum scene fared poorly at test screenings until he switched sequences around and Hughes changed the soundtrack. The Ben Rose House, in Highland Park, Illinois, served as the filming location for Cameron Frye's house.

At TPG, we’ve always found packing a bag and embarking on a globe-trotting adventure is a fine antidote to troubling times. But for many people, it's returning to simpler times, when the Commodore computer and the Sony Walkman were state-of-the-art and you could wear leg warmers in summer while singing along to power ballads, that helps distract from life's daily stresses. He famous glass house of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off fame just sold for $1.06 million.
